Mr. Alejandro Gonzalez-Davidson, who is currently living in Spain, has not been allowed back in Cambodia since 2015. In the case of Rong Chhun, a prominent union leader who was arrested on 31 July 2020 for his comments on the Cambodia-Vietnam border, and of Ms. Sar Kanika and Mr. Ton Nimol, who were arrested for protesting for Mr. Rong Chhun’s release in August 2020, the Appeal Court reduced and suspended their sentences: - Rong Chhun’s two-year sentence was changed to a sentence of one year, three months and 11 days in prison. This morning’s ruling resulted in over eight months of his sentence being suspended. - Sar Kanika’s 20 months sentence was changed to a sentence of 15 months and five days in prison. This morning’s ruling resulted in over four months of her sentence being suspended. - Ton Nimol’s 20 months sentence was changed to a sentence of 14 months and 24 days in prison. This morning’s ruling resulted in over five months of his sentence being suspended. Their fines of two million riels each remain applicable, as does the compensation of 400 million riels they owe to the Cambodia Border Committee. All three were also handed three years of probation during which they will have to comply with various measures announced by the Court. They were also ordered not to associate with anyone convicted in the same case. | ||

Kunthea and Keoraksmey had been handed 18-month sentences, and this morning they had four months of those sentences suspended. They were also handed three years of probation under Articles 119 and 120, which carries conditions such as informing a prosecutor of any change of address, change of occupation, or intention to leave the country, among others. They were also ordered to not associate with anyone convicted in the same case, and if they are convicted of incitement again in the next three years, they will have to serve the full original sentence in addition to any new sentence. Three of them, Mr. Thon Ratha, Ms. Phoun Keo Reaksmey and Ms. Long Kuthea were released on 10 November 2021. |
