Boeung Kak activist rushed to hospital
An imprisoned Boeung Kak land-rights activist was yesterday rushed to hospital suffering from heart problems, a rights worker said. It came amid renewed calls for authorities to release a group of Boeung Kak activists imprisoned last month, some of whom have been staging a hunger strike in Prey Sar prison. Phan Chhunreth was taken to Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital where doctors found her heart was beating unusually slow, making it hard for her to breathe, said Am Sam Ath, technical adviser for rights group Licadho.

A broker was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday for trafficking five elderly people from Cambodia to Malaysia, where they hoped to work as beggars. Presiding judge Mong Mony Sorphea said that Khay Seng, 57, had been charged by the prosecutor with “unlawful removal for cross-border transfer” under the Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.

Among speakers at the rally was So Sorthy of the Cambodian Center for Independent Media. The draft cybercrime law was written without imput of civil society, and diminishes the ability to share information and organise via social media in Cambodia, he said. “If the law is adopted [in its current form], people will be criminally charged just for sharing, posting or expressing ideas online,” Sorthy said.

In Battambang's Sangke district, the outbreak that has seen more than 100 people test positive for HIV has devastated a community. And for one family, the pain has been intensified by the sheer number of those infected – 15 out of a possible 16 have tested positive. “It’s just unbelievable,” said Chhay Yav, 78, who herself has contracted HIV. “I am old, it is OK. But I pity my grandchildren; some of them are 6 months old, 2 years old, 18 years old.”
