Groups Call on Tribunal To Find Salaries for Interpreters
PHNOM PENH - An international association of interpreters is calling for the UN-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal to find a way to pay the salaries of staff at the court so that an atrocity crimes trial for three former regime leaders can continue. The Switzerland-based International Association of Conference Interpreters called for “all parties concerned to attain a swift and satisfactory resolution” in what it called a “dire situation.”

Two more Cambodians were reportedly shot dead in Thailand on Monday after crossing the border in search of Luxury rosewood, an official said yesterday. The deaths bring to seven the count of loggers killed this year over the border.

Sam Rainsy Drops Countersuit Against Foreign Minister in Defamation Case
PHNOM PENH - Opposition leader Sam Rainsy on Tuesday announced he was withdrawing an appeal in the Cambodian courts in a case brought by Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, who claims he was defamed by a speech Sam Rainsy made in 2008. Sam Rainsy told VOA Khmer by phone from Bangkok that a French court had already cleared him of defamation charges brought there by Hor Namhong, whom Sam Rainsy said was a cohort of the Khmer Rouge during his time at a prison camp run by the regime. Hor Namhong says he was a prisoner there.

Wage talks at a stand still
PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The three-hour meeting Monday between government representatives, factory employers and union leaders resulted in a stale mate. At Ministry of Social Affairs, employers didn't budge from their offer of $75 a month while the union still demanded between $91 and $100. Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Confederation of Unions, said that employers would only increase salaries by $14 which included $5 for health care in addition to current minimum wage of $61.

Two Khmer Krom Men Questioned in Court
Two Khmer Krom men who were arrested on Friday were sent yesterday to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning, but the court officials would not disclose what crime the men are suspected of committing. Court clerk Sok Ty said that the court needs to finish questioning the suspects before revealing what the crime they were accused of.

Chanel explores "Kingdom of Cambodia"
A FORMER local has been exposed to the "Kingdom of Cambodia" through the eyes of an Australian human rights intern. Studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice at Flinders University in Adelaide, Chanel Martin is now in her final year and for the past three months has worked as an international intern with the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights in the country's capital, Phnom Penh. Located on the banks of the Mekong River, it is home to more than 2.2 million people. Having left Kingston in 2006 after finishing her schooling at Kingston Community School, Chanel began studying her law degree immediately, which has led her on a journey of experiences and numerous overseas adventures. While interning, the law student has been working on two projects - "the Project to Promote Women's Political Participation in Cambodia" and the "Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Project".

Two Men Arrested for Distributing Pornography
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged two men with distributing pornography, Municipal Court Judge Ly Lipmeng said. Phok Sambor, 22, and Kong Chanvuthy, 24, were arrested Friday by the Phnom Penh’s anti trafficking police in Meanchey district’s Stung Meanchey commune, for allegedly installing pornographic video onto mobile phone devices.

Reporters Without Borders and the Cambodian Center for Independent Media demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mam Sonando, owner of Beehive radio, whose brief trial growing out of charges of fomenting insurrection ended on 6 March. The verdict in the case, an appeal of a lower court conviction, will be announced on 14 March. “The principal accusers did not appear at the trial,” Reporters Without Borders said. “No new evidence was presented. The continued detention of Mam Sonando is completely unjustified.”
