CCHR urges court officials to expedite appeal in controversial lesbian case

It was reported in The Phnom Penh Post on 14 February 2012 (UN funds appeal in young lesbian’s case) that the UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (the OHCHR) is funding a lawyer for an appeal in a young lesbian’s case. Phlong Srey Rann was arrested on 12 August 2011, just two days after her girlfriend’s brother accused her of illegal detention and human trafficking. In November 2011, a judge found her guilty of having sexual intercourse with a minor and sentenced her to five years in prison.

CCHR’s Statement in Support of the Judgment in the Zoliswa Nkonyana Case

It was reported by the BBC News on February 1, 2012 that Lesbian Killer in South Africa get 18-year jail terms. The Court in Khayelitsha, a Cape Town township, found four men Lubabalo Ntlabathi, Sicelo Mase, Luyanda Londzi and Mbulelo Damba guilt and sentenced them to 18 years in jail for stabbing and stoning to death 19-year-old openly lesbian Zoliswa Nkonyana in 2006 – a crime motivated by hate and intolerance on the basis of sexual orientation.

Health Service Delivery Profile Cambodia

Cambodias health system has experienced several drastic changes in the last decades and therefore is not as developed as necessary. The Ministry of Health (MOH) and several NGOs work to strengthen the health service infrastructure and improve the quality of public healthcare for the Cambodian population. However, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing significantly, now causing an estimated 53% of deaths per year, and health centres and hospitals lack key personnel, adequacy of essential drugs and operational guideline requirements.

Discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity

Discriminatory laws and practices, as well as acts of violence against LGBT individuals, due to their true or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, occur in all parts of the world. International human rights law can be utilized to end such discrimination and human rights abuses, and guarantee human rights to every individual, independent from their sexual orientation or gender identity.
