In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power. The Declaration establishes basic principles aimed at assisting Governments and the international community in their efforts to secure justice and assistance for victims of crime and victims of abuse of power by ensuring that they have access to justice and to restitution and compensation.
