  • Bail Denied for 21 Labor Activists

    The Court of Appeals on Monday denied the release of 21 labor activists who have been detained since brutal demonstration crackdowns in January. The defendants had sought release on bail, with several claiming serious injuries from police beatings during the crackdown. A wife of one of the defendants burst into tears as she heard the decision. Critics say the 21 are being held without bail as a tactic to intimidate other would-be protesters.

In an interview at his home in Phnom Penh, the prince told VOA Khmer Khmer he decided the country needs a new party, because the two current leading parties cannot resolve their political differences. Prince Ranarridh is the son of the former king, Norodom Sihanouk, who played a major political role in Cambodia throughout his lifetime. "I want to mobilize nationalism, Sihanoukism, to join in my party and restore the royal family," the prince said

  • Political Parties Agree on Way Forward for Political Reform​

    Cambodia's ruling and opposition parties reopened negotiations on Tuesday, seeking to end a political deadlock that has been in place since July's national elections. Negotiators from the Cambodian People's Party and the Cambodia National Rescue Party spoke for more than two hours at the Senate building in Phnom Penh, agreeing to look for ways to reform Cambodia's political process. The two sides said in a joint statement they hoped to organized a national forum that would draw from the international community, local NGOs and other interested parties to work on reform. The talks marked the most progress in negotiations between the two sides since similar meetings in September 2013.

  • Nine Injured as Housing Demonstrators Clash With Police

    Nine people were injured, three of them seriously, when housing rights demonstrators clashed with police on Friday morning. About 50 evictees from the Borei Keila neighborhood of Phnom Penh tried to position themselves in a building development at the site of their former homes, when they ran into police. "They came and beat everybody," said Sor Sorn, one of the protesters. Among those injured was a pregnant woman. The injured were taken to the offices of the rights group Licadho before they were moved to local health clinics. Borei Keila residents have been in a conflict with the development company, Phanimex, since 2007.
