Bail Hearing of Yorm Bopha 27 March 2013

Today the Supreme Court refused Yorm Bopha’s application for bail. The Court had heard that she hoped to be allowed to serve her sentence outside of prison, so that she could look after her young son, her own health and help support her family. After the decision she was returned to Prey Sar prison where she will now wait for her appeal to be heard by the Court of Appeal.

Roundtable discussion on Investment Projects and Land Concessions, Koh Kong

Today, 29 March 2013, a roundtable discussion on Investment Projects and Land Concessions is being held at the Koh Kong City Hotel, Koh Kong province. The roundtable is jointly hosted by the NGO Forum on Cambodia, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights and the Community Legal Education Center. Thirty-five participants have attended the roundtable, including local NGO representatives, political representatives and community representatives from Chikhor Leu and Chikhor Kroum commune, whose land has been affected by land concessions granted to two companies, Heng Huy Agriculture Group and Koh Kong Sugar Industry Co Ltd. A representative of Koh Kong Sugar Industry Co Ltd is also in attendance at the roundtable, in order to respond to questions from community and civil society representatives.

Today members of the Boeng Kak community submitted a petition to the King of Cambodia, asking him to intervene in the case of land rights activist Yorm Bopha and secure her immediate release from prison

Commemoration of the 127th International Labor Day

In commemoration of the 127th Int’l Labor Day, more than 7,000 factory workers in Cambodia have gathered and marched to the National Assembly. The parade went well smoothly with facilitation from authorities. Gathering started at about 7:00AM at the Freedom Park, where protesters marched to the NA at about 8:15AM. The protest wrapped up at about 11:00AM on the same morning with participation from political parties’ representatives.

International Children’s Day 01 June 2013

To commemorate the International Children’s day, children from Boeung Kak and 8 other communities in Phnom Penh marched on 1 June 2013 to demand for the release of Lous Lihour’s mother, Yorm Bopha. The protest started in Boeng Kak, passed in front of the US embassy and finished at the Court of Appeal.Around 200 people took part in the demonstration. Yorm Bopha has been under arbitrary arrest since 4 September 2012.

Political Forum on environment and land, hosted on 31 May 2013

Today, the political forum on the perspectives of the political parties on “environment and land in Cambodia” took place in cooperation with the NGO forum on Cambodia, CCHR, COMFREL, CCFC and CRRT. The forum was hosted at the Golden Sand Hotel, Prah Sihanouk province. The main speakers were H.E. Sun Sokhan, Sihanouk provincial deputy governor; H.E. Eng Chhai Eng, CNRP representative; H.E Tep Nonry, Funcipec Party representative; and Mr. Kem Ley, Independent Analyst, who participated in order to address questions raised by the forum participants regarding environment and land in Cambodia. Approximately 130 people, from Koh Kong, Kampot and Sihanouk Provinces, participated in the forum.
