Methodology : This information, published by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights ("CCHR"), was gathered from official records of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia ("GMAC"), as well as from Khmer and English news media which cover news related to factories in Cambodia, as of May 2013.
CCHR does not contend that the information presented here is completely accurate and conclusive; some of the information varies from source to source and some information is unavailable to the public. This map represents a list of major garment factories registered with the Ministry of Commerce and related authorities and who are members of GMAC. It is thought that there are additional factories running in Cambodia which are not GMAC members.
Information for each factory presented on the map details at least four out of the following six categories:
- Name of the factory;
- Official location of the factory;
- Country of origin of the factory's owner(s);
- Type of products manufactured at the factory;
- Major brands supplied by the factory; and
- Number of workers employed at the factory.
CCHR encourages other organizations and institutions – governmental and non-governmental – to publish similar information to increase the amount of information available and to enhance public understanding of the issue, particularly as regards labor and human rights-related issues. The aim of this map is to contribute to holding factories accountable for their corporate social responsibility, underpinned by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The map details a total of at least 558 garment factories operating in Cambodia; some factories do not have sufficiently required information to be included in this research. The owners of these factories are based in Cambodia as well as from a number of foreign countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macau, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Turkey.
Of these 558 factories, 394 are located in the capital city of Phnom Penh, 82 in Kandal province, 28 in Kampong Speu province and 16 in Sihanoukville province. The other 38 are located in Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot, Koh Kong, Siem Reap, Svay Rieng and Takeo provinces. These 558 factories employ at least 475,107 workers; some of the factories do not report the number of employees.
At least 95 of the factories on the map are reported to have produced and supplied products to major international brands, including, but not limited to, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Clarks, H&M, Levi's, Macy, Nike, Old Navy, Puma, Reebok, The Gap and Wal-Mart.
