Government Starts Preparing Confiscated ELCs for Poor
Land Management Minister Im Chhun Lim said on Monday his staff were already at work studying land that the government has confiscated from economic land concession (ELC) owners for redistribution to poor families, though details on the location of the sites remained elusive. On Thursday, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced the end of the government’s yearslong review of the country’s ELCs and said that almost half of the more than 2 million hectares that were handed out to companies for their agribusiness projects had been reappropriated. Unionists Questioned Over Garment Factory Clash

Siem Reap residents protest unwanted address change
About 70 residents from a village in Siem Reap’s Ampil commune yesterday submitted a petition to provincial officials requesting that they not be switched to the authority of neighbouring Nokor Thom commune, though at least one local official claimed the matter was long decided. CNRP Senator Makes Case for Bail at Supreme Court
Opposition Senator Hong Sok Hour, who has been in prison since August on incitement and fraud charges, had his request for bail on health grounds heard by the Supreme Court on Friday. Migrants Still Deported En Masse from Thailand
Almost 70,000 Cambodian migrant workers were deported from Thailand through the Poipet international checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province last year, with the daily average being about 200, Poipet checkpoint Immigration police chief Sim Sam Ath said yesterday, citing an annual report. Of the 67,087 migrant workers deported, 21,797 were women, Mr. Sam Ath said. He also said that Cambodians who crossed the border for illegal logging often did so through illegal corridors. Those caught were often shot by Thai border police, Mr. Sam Ath added.

Nearly 100 residents from six communities within Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district filed a petition to City Hall, the Canadian Embassy and the World Bank yesterday demanding intervention in a land dispute with the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC), which is responsible for constructing a satellite city on the peninsula.
