Legal Analysis of the Pre-trial Detention of Mr. Ny Sokha, Mr. Yi Soksan, Mr. Nay Vanda, Ms. Lim Mony and Mr. Ny Chakrya
Mr. Ny Sokha, Mr. Yi Soksan, Mr. Nay Vanda, and Ms. Lim Mony, four senior staff members of the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (“ADHOC”), and Mr. Ny Chakrya, a former ADHOC staff member and current Deputy Secretary-General of the National Election Committee, have been detained in Phnom Penh since 28 April 2016. They are charged with bribery of a witness under Article 548 of the Cambodian Criminal Code, and Mr. Ny Chakrya is charged as an accomplice to the same crime.

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) has today – 27 September 2016 – published a report entitled, “Cambodia’s Women in Land Conflict” (the “Report”). The Report is the outcome of research conducted by CCHR’s Land Reform Project on women in land conflict throughout the Kingdom of Cambodia (“Cambodia”), and is available for download from CCHR’s website in English and Khmer.

CCHR press conference to launch research report on women in land conflict and ten new profiles highlighting Cambodia’s land disputes
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) is pleased to announce that it will hold a press conference at 8:30am on Tuesday 27 September 2016 at its office in Phnom Penh, to mark the launch of its report entitled, “Cambodia’s Women in Land Conflict” (the “Report”), and the release of ten new profiles of activists and communities involved in land conflicts in eight provinces in Cambodia. The ten profiles complete CCHR’s Land Profile Series, which highlight 30 cases across 15 provinces and Phnom Penh, whereby communities and activists involved in land disputes have suffered land and related human rights violations at the hands of the authorities and private actors.

Civil society condemns conviction of human rights defender Ny ChakryarnrnWe, the undersigned civil society organisations, condemn in the strongest terms today’s unjustified conviction of former Head of the Human Rights and Monitoring Section of the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) and Deputy Secretary-General of the National Election Committee (“NEC”), Mr. Ny Chakrya, by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court. After a four and a half hour trial, Judge Khy Chhay deliberated for a mere 15 minutes before deciding to convict Mr. Ny Chakrya on charges of defamation, malicious denunciation, and publication of commentaries intended to unlawfully coerce judicial authorities, under Articles 305, 311 and 522 respectively of the Cambodian Criminal Code. Mr. Ny Chakrya was sentenced to six months in prison and given a fine of six million Riel (approximately $1500

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) publishes today - 21 September 2016 - a research report entitled “Discrimination against Transgender Women in Cambodia’s Urban Centers” (“the Report”). It is available for download in both English and Khmer on CCHR’s website. The Report is produced by CCHR’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (“SOGI”) Project and is the product of research conducted in the Kingdom of Cambodia (“Cambodia”)’s urban centers on the prevalence and forms of discrimination against transgender (“trans”) women.
