Garment Waste From Walmart, Disney, Other Major Brands Continues to Fuel Cambodian Brick Kilns
Here in Kandal province, about an hour’s drive from Phnom Penh, strips of factory textile off-cuts – the unused cloth and scraps left over from producing clothes – spill out of trash bags stacked up along the length of the kilns, each with a set of soot-covered chimneys peeking out above a metal roof. On the other side of the kilns, rows and rows of unfinished bricks wait to be baked.

A Year After Her Dismissal, Union Leader Roeun Kolap Demands Justice And Reinstatement
Seeing that the factory violated workers’ rights and discriminated against the union, she decided to file a complaint at the Kampong Speu Provincial Court for “dismissing her for no reason”. However, her hearing scheduled on June 12, 2024, was postponed as the judge was unwell. “The judge was sick on the day before the hearing. He should have told me not to come,” said Kolap. “I think that is an excuse. I am very upset because I expect the court to solve this case for me because I just found a new job. If I take leave often, the new factory might fire me too.” In February this year, over 100 garment workers at Shengbo protested, demanding the reinstatement of two workers who were fired just after they were elected as union leaders in the factory.

Union Representatives Protest Against CENTRAL For “Restrictive” Freedom of Association Report
On Friday, the protesters submitted a petition to CENTRAL, stating that its report was “baseless” and “did not reflect the truth of the situation of unions in Cambodia”. It also submitted a petition to the Ministry of Interior. On June 4, CENTRAL released a report following a one-year study, titled “Barriers to Representation: Freedom of Association in Cambodia”, where union representatives from 10 out of 14 workplaces said they faced violations of freedom of association.

Child wasting, stunting and malnutrition raising concerns
The government and civil organizations have voiced concerns over the discontinuation of treatment of children facing malnutrition, stunting and wasting by some parents and caregivers across the country. According to Plan International Cambodia (PLC), about 30% of children suffering from stunting and wasting in three provinces have stopped treatment, which is preventing the National Strategy on Improving Food Security and Nutrition in the Kingdom from achieving its goal of eliminating the problem.

Five environmental activists, charged with insulting the King and plotting against the government, produced a 30-minute podcast live on Facebook just before their third hearing to prove their innocence. Two Chhouk Va High School Directors Suspended, Pending Investigation of Embezzlement Following Protests
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and Phnom Penh Department of Education have formed a joint committee with three officers to investigate the allegations of misappropriation of funds and corruption involving the principal and deputy principal of Chea Sim Chhouk Va High School. The three appointees will also act as school representatives. This follows a three-month protest by 67 teachers, who requested the MoEYS to expedite an investigation and replace the duo. The teachers boycotted three school shifts to carry out the protest using banners.

Supreme Court Hears NPP Official’s Bail Appeal, Fixes June 10 for Verdict
On Friday morning, the Supreme Court heard the appeal of Meu Senghor, interim vice president of National Power Party’s Kampong Cham province division, who asked to be released on bail. He argued that placing him in pretrial detention was inconsistent with his charge and the law. Kong Srim, president of the Trial Chamber, was on the panel with four other judges who heard the appeal. Following the submissions by both parties, Srim set June 10, 2024 to deliver their verdict.

Phnom Penh officials to allow Kampuchea Krom event – but with restrictions
Phnom Penh authorities on Friday signed off on a public gathering to commemorate a French colonial decision to cede much of the lower Mekong Delta to Vietnam, but organizers were given strict guidelines on what can be said at the event. Association officials requested that 500 people be allowed to attend the event at Phnom Penh’s Wat Samaki Rainsy, but authorities said they would only allow 300 people, and the event could only last for four hours in the evening.
