Today, 14 October 2013, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights ("CCHR") releases a Briefing Note summarizing developments in the long-awaited trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan (“Case 002”) at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (the “ECCC”). The Briefing Note focuses particularly on the decision of the Trial Chamber of the ECCC to split Case 002 into an undetermined number of sub-trials (the “Severance”) and addresses the way it impacts the progress of the Khmer Rouge trials and, more generally, the achievement of justice and national reconciliation in the Kingdom of Cambodia (“Cambodia”).
