    CHRAC Statement on Lobor Day

On the occasion of the 124th Anniversary of International Labour Day, 1st May 2010, the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC), a coalition of 23 NGO members, wishes to extend its pleasure and warmest congratulation to this event which is being celebrated by many civil society and labor unions worldwide and especially in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The International Labor Day or the Day to mark International Declaration on Labour Rights is a very important day as it reflects the past efforts and sacrifices of many labour heroes who have made tremendous endeavors in demanding for the respect of rights and dignity as human beings. Furthermore, the Labour Day, which is now being celebrated, is even encouraging the continued efforts with the aim to promote the respect for labor rights and to improve the working conditions in this country. Taking this historic opportunity and as a coalition of NGOs working for the promotion of human rights and democracy, CHRAC would like to congratulate this year celebration and positions raised by various trade unions groups such as their demands for respect of some working conditions including request for increasing workers’ salaries up to 93$ per month in order for them have appropriate living condition. However, we are concerned about the past situation of respect and implementation of labour rights which were often disturbed or cracked down by Cambodian government authorities for instance; right to peaceful assembly and expressing of opinions, right to strike, and freedom of union creation, etc. Therefore, CHRAC would like to suggest to the Royal Government of Cambodia and other relevant authorities to continue promoting the respect implementation of labour rights properly and effectively as clearly defined in the International Declaration on Labor Rights and Cambodian Labour Law; particularly the workers’ freedom of opinion expression in demanding for the respect of their working conditions as well as strengthening peaceful and just labor disputes resolutions.
