Human Rights and Freedom of Press at center of Four Freedoms Awards 2010
On May 29, 2010 the International Four Freedoms Award 2010 will be granted to the European Court of Human Rights, in a ceremony held in the Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg. Jean Paul Costa, the President of the Court will accept the medal on behalf of the Court. At the same ceremony, the Freedom of Speech and Expression Medal will be granted to the Russian weekly Novaya Gazeta, for their resolute commitment to freedom of the press, the Freedom of Worship Medal to human rights activist and UN-rapporteur for freedom of religion Dr. Asma Jahangir from Pakistan.

Civil Society Condemns AICHR for Refusing to Meet, Calls for Draft Rules of Procedure to be Made Public and Hold Wider Consultation
The Solidarity for Asian Peoples Advocacy Taskforce on ASEAN Human Rights (SAPA TFAHR) is disappointed that only two country representatives of the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission for Human Rights (AICHR) responded to our request for a meeting in Jakarta today. The purpose of the requested meeting was to present the civil society proposal for the AICHR’s Rules of Procedures (RoP) as the AICHR meets for the first time to draft the RoP. Representatives of civil society organizations from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand went to the ASEAN Secretariat to present the civil society proposal but were disappointed to be informed that not all the country representatives of the AICHR would be meeting them.

The bogus charges against the two community representatives constitute yet another instance of Cambodia’s rich and powerful using the judicial system as a tool of enrichment and weapon of ntimidation. We also condemn the response of mixed police forces to the villagers who came to the provincial court to show their support.

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) welcomes the acceptance by the Royal Government of Cambodia (the “RGC”) of all 91 recommendations made by the members of the United Nations Human Rights Council following the Universal Periodic Review (the “UPR”) of Cambodia’s human rights record held in December 2009. The CCHR calls on the RGC to pursue the substantive changes required to implement each of the recommendations it has embraced.
