Joint Statement of Cambodian and Thai Civil Society Organizations
In the occasion of gathering of ASEAN People Forum, Cambodian and ThaiCivil Society Organizations have viewed as follows: The simmering tensions at the Cambodian-Thailand border have erupted, as soldiers from both sides have been exchanging shells and bullets. With continued fighting, villagers from border communities in both countries face great risks and are being displaced. As bilateral talks have proven ineffective, it is crucial for ASEAN leaders to play a leading role in ending the conflict.

UNESCO Bangkok held a 2011 World Press Freedom Day Dialogue and Photo Exhibition on: “21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers,” on 3 May 2011. For this day UNESCO indentifies threats to press freedom in Mekong Region. In Cambodia, according to President of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights Ou Virak said 13 journalists in Cambodia were killed between 1992 and 2008 and Till today no one has been brought to justice.

The number of people worldwide with access to free and independent media declined to its lowest level in over a decade, according a Freedom House study released today. The report, Freedom of the Press 2011: A Global Survey of Media Independence, found that a number of key countries—including Egypt, Honduras, Hungary, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine—experienced significant declines, producing a global landscape in which only one in six people live in countries with a press that is designated Free.
