In celebration of International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2011, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) will support a number of activities with communities throughout the country. These events are a reminder of the increasing awareness and understanding of and demand for human rights in communities throughout the country.

Statement by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Professor Surya P. Subedi
“I am about to complete my sixth human rights fact-finding mission to Cambodia. The focus of this mission has been a human rights assessment of State institutions relevant to the electoral process in the Kingdom, including the laws, policies and practices applicable to elections. During my mission I also have attempted to assess any progress in the implementation of recommendations contained in my previous reports to the Human Rights Council, and I have taken the opportunity to continue to monitor and address other ongoing human rights issues in the country, such as disputes related to land, freedom of expression, and the proposed Law on Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Electoral capacity gaps still remain in Cambodia, warns UN Special Rapporteur
PHNOM PEHN / GENEVA (9 December 2011) – United Nations Special Rapporteur Surya P. Subedi urged* the Government of Cambodia to address capacity gaps within the electoral system as a whole, in order to create an environment that helps free speech flourish and that encourages debate amongst all political parties.

Celebration of the 63rd Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On Saturday 10 December, there will be about 4,000 participants from senate, national assembly, government, UN officials, NGOs , unions, youth, student, indigenous communities, foreign diplomats, gathering to mark the 63rd Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (10 Dec. 1948 - 10 Dec. 2011) at Freedom Park, Phnom Penh from 6.30 am to 4.30 pm. The celebration is tied together with the common themes “Independent Judiciary and Freedom of Expression are Foundations for Social Justice and Respect for Human Rights”.
