The Observatory: Cambodia:Independent radio station director Mam Sonando arrested and charged
CAMBODIA: Paris-Geneva, July 17, 2012. The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), is gravely concerned about the serious charges pressed against Mr. Mam Sonando, Director and Owner of the FM station 105 ( Beehive Radio), one of the few independent media outlets in Cambodia. Mr. Sonando is also known for his criticisms of the Government’s human rights record and his denunciation of land evictions.

July 16, 2012 - The undersigned organizations are deeply disturbed by independent radio station director Mam Sonando’s arrest on Sunday, July 15, 2012, and call for his immediate release. Mr. Sonando, who holds both Cambodian and French citizenship, is the owner of Beehive Radio, which is among the few independent radio stations in Cambodia. Sonando is also the founder and president of the Democrat Association.

The Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC)—a coalition of 22 NGO members—is very disappointed at the recent arrest of Mr. Mam Sonando, Director of 105 FM MHz beehive radio and President of Democrats Association, on 15 July 2012 at 8.56 am.Immediately after the arrest, he was then put in police custody at the Ministry of Interior. Mr.Mam was brought to Phnom Penh Municipal Court on 16 July 2012 at 10.20 am and was ordered to be placed in provisional detention at Correctional Center I (known as “Preysar Prison”).
