Release of Imprisoned Mothers and Pregnant Women Will Provide Some Relief but Does Not Address Underlying Issues
March 2, 2015 - Late last week a committee headed by the Ministry of Justice announced that 16 incarcerated women, including 15 women with children and one pregnant woman, will be released before International Women’s Day on March 8, 2015. The committee also stated that the government plans to release pregnant women and women with children every year.

As of January 2015, there were 39 children between the ages of one month and four years living with their mothers in 18 Cambodian prisons monitored by LICADHO. Approximately half of them were born in prison and almost all have never experienced or do not remember life beyond prison walls.

In recent days, Immigration Department officials have been quoted in the media saying that Spanish activist Alex Gonzalez-Davidson will be forced to leave the country, in what appears to be an attempt to put a stop to his environmental and human rights activism in the Areng Valley. The comments follow earlier reported statements by Cambodia People’s Party lawmaker and National Assembly spokesperson Chheang Vun, that the Royal Government of Cambodia (“RGC”) intended to arrest and deport an unnamed foreign national, widely believed to be Mr. Gonzalez-Davidson.

Civil Society Groups Condemn the Ongoing Detention of 11 Activists
We the undersigned civil society groups condemn the indefensible verdicts issued this morning by the Court of Appeal in the cases of ten land activists and one monk. Following an appeal hearing that was characterized by an almost total absence of fair trial rights, the Court of Appeal upheld the wrongful convictions and sentences originally imposed by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, albeit partially reducing some of the sentences and fines.

I am about to complete my 12th and final mission to the Kingdom of Cambodia as the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the country. It has been a privilege to serve the people of Cambodia over the past six years. At the outset, I wish to express my appreciation to the Royal Government of Cambodia for the positive and constructive cooperation extended to me during this mission. While I was not able to meet with the Prime Minister this time, I very much appreciated the dialogue I had with the Government interlocutors which was candid, cordial and informative throughout.
