Cambodian Government is drafting the first ever Cyber Law
According to today’s article in The Phnom Penh Post entitled ‘The “ill-willed spark cyber law: officials’, the Royal Government of Cambodia is drafting its first cyber law, a move designed to prevent “ill-willed groups or individuals” from spreading false information, government officials said yesterday. Press and Quick Reaction Unit Spokesman Ek Tha said the law is not intended to restrict media, but to ensure that the “common interest is protected.” “The government right now is drafting the first-ever cyber law, given the mushrooming of…modern technology like Twitter and You Tube and email and all sorts of technology activity,” Ek Tha said.

Thirteen women affected by the land conflict at Phnom Penh’s Boeung Kak Lake who have led protests against the eviction were today convicted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on charges of inciting others to take land illegally under Article 504 of the Penal Code and obtaining land illegally under Articles 34, 259 of the Land Law Act after being detained without charge for a period of 48 hours.

At roughly 11:30am on 22 May 2012, a group of 13 BoeungKak activists were arrested by police while holding a peaceful protest and news conference in Village 1, BoeungKak Lake. According to reports, more than two hundred BoeungKak residents came together to protest against what they saw as empty governmental promises to resolve the on-going BoeungKak land crisis and call for their land to be returned, or proper compensation to be paid for their loss.
