Ban on Election Campaign References to the Monarchy is Unconstitutional
As in previous elections, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party or CPP is exploiting all the advantages it has to garner popular support, while the other parties are facing threats, intimidation, assassinations, and restrictions in one form of another. According a group of civil society organizations, during the period of January 2008 -- May 2008, there were five cases of political killings, 21 cases of harassment of and threat against party activists and 15 cases of dismantling of party banner signs.

Government Should Lift Ban on Kratie Local Radio Station
LICADHO appeals to the government to allow the immediate reopening of radio FM 105.25 in Kratie province, without any censorship or other restrictions on its broadcasts.The Ministry of Information last week closed down the new radio station, which had broadcasted for only 13 days, because it sold air time to political parties.

Very recently, the Cambodian authorities at two different locations took action to ban peaceful public demonstrations of the people as they wanted to express themselves against the wrongdoings affecting their livelihood. On 12 May 2008 fifteen indigenous minority associations in the northeastern province of Rattanakiri sought permission from the provincial authorities to hold a seminar and, at the end of it, organize a procession in the provincial capital, Banlung.

Cambodia’s media is often described as one of the freest in the region, but in reality journalists describe an environment in which the pursuit of truth is undermined by political bias, fear and corruption. Most of Cambodia’s media outlets are aligned to political party and most favor the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Bribes are so commonplace they are not even considered corruption. Formal censorship exists and self-censorship is widespread through Cambodia’s media.

Detained Policeman Transferred to Hospital Because of Poor Health
Pring Pov, the Kep policeman who has been unlawfully detained for more than one month by the Ministry of Interior, was sent by police to Monivong Hospital yesterday.
