Bangkok, September 12, 2012--Cambodian authorities must immediately investigate the murder of a journalist who was found with ax wounds in the trunk of his car on Tuesday, less than a week after he had exposed an alleged military connection to the illicit timber trade, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

Key Statistics of Women Candidates and Women Elected Commune/Sangkat Councils Elections, June 2012
This leaflet contains statistical information relating to the number of women candidates who stood for election, and the number of women who were actually elected in the Commune/Sangkat elections on 3 June 2012. Ten political parties ran in the elections: the Cambodian People’s Party ("CPP"), the Sam Rainsy Party ("SRP"), FUNCIPEC Party ("FCP"), the Norodom Rannaridh Party ("NRP"), the Human Rights Party ("HRP"), the League for Democracy Party ("LDP"), the Khmer Anti-Poverty Party ("APP"), the Khmer National Party ("KNP"), the Republic Democratic Party ("RDP"), and the Democratic Movement Party ("DMP"). Of these ten parties, only seven won seats in the elections. There were a total of 28,481 out of 111,056 women candidates (25.65%) and women were elected to 2,038 seats, 17.79% of the total number of seat (11,459). The data below is taken from information gathered by the National Election Committee (“NEC”).

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) and the Southeast Asian Press Alliance(SEAPA)are deeply concerned about the case of Mr.Hang Serei Odom, a journalist from Virakchun Khmer Daily newspaper in Ratanakkiri, who was found dead inside the trunk of his car yesterday. Hang Serei Odom reported on illegal logging and had in the last four months of working with the Virakchun Khmer Daily newspaper, uncovered several cases linked to powerful, well-‐connected Cambodian elite. CCHR and SEAPA call for a thorough investigation in to this case that is closely related to press freedom and freedom of expression in Cambodia.
