Cambodian Human Rights Center (CCHR) today releases a press release calling on Cambodians to combat homophobic violence against women. Tomorrow, 8 March, is International Women’s Day (“IWD”), when people around the world celebrate this historic day by marking the economic, political, cultural and social participation and achievement of women. To commemorate this 101st IWD, the United Nations declares its overall theme to be “Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty”, while Cambodia has her own theme – “My marvelous mother!”.

The Global Report on the Situation of Women Human Rights Defenders, hereon referred to as the Global Report, reflects the growing body of analyses produced by the members of the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD International Coalition) since 2005. It demonstrates the evolution of our articulation of challenges to women human rights defenders (WHRDs), the source of these challenges and how best to respond to them. The use of 43 cases studies selected by WHRD International Coalition illuminate specific trends and experiences of WHRDs. The cases provide a vivid glimpse of the landscape in which WHRDs live and work.

UNHCR has worked closely with the Refugee Office, established by the Royal Government of Cambodia under the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Interior. Subsequent to the Government’s adoption of the Sub-Decree No 224 on Procedure of Determination of Refugee Status and the Right of Asylum for Aliens in Cambodia, the Cambodian government has accepted responsibility for the processing and adjudicating of all refugee cases.
