2011 was marked by courages acts by ordinary Cambodians to protect their land, their homes, their livelihoods, thier tradtions, their dignity and their rights more generally. This fact sheet gives an overview of activism in Cambodia in 2011 focusing on three particular cases: Prey Lang forest, the Angkor Beer Promoters, and Boeung Kak lake. This fact sheet is written by Cambodian Center for Human Rights ("CCHR"), a non-aligned, independent, non-governmental organization ("NGO") that works to promote and protect democracy and respect human rights - primarily civil and political rights- throughout Kingdom of Cambodia ("Cambodia").

3 indigenous communities to receive communal land titles
Three indigenous villages comprising 329 families in the northeast region of Cambodia have been granted communal land titles by the Royal Government, the first to be issued in the country. In a joint ceremony on 14 December 2011 in Rattanakiri province, community members of Le En village in Teun commune, Koun Mom district and La L’eun Kraen village in Ou Chum commune, Ou Chum district, received their certificates of collective land title for 1,454 hectares and 920 hectares, respectively.

CCHR condemns Royal Pardon and premature release of convicted pedophiles
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) condemns the premature release from prison of three convicted pedophiles. On 27 December, 2011, it was reported in the Phnom Penh Post (“Anger over pedophile pardons”), that in addition to the pardon and release of Russian Alexander Trofimov and German Alexander Watrin, a third pedophile, Dutch national Rene Paul Martin Aubel, sentenced to 10 years for sex crimes against six boys in 2005, was released from prison on 23 December, 2011 after receiving a royal pardon.
