    The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Professor Surya P. Subedi, welcomes the decision of the Royal Government of Cambodia to accept the 91 recommendations following Cambodia’s submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review. “This demonstrates the public commitment of the Government of Cambodia to pursue its efforts to build a functioning system of the rule of law guided by international human rights norms, which is an important factor in the development of the country”, said the Rapporteur.

At the same ceremony, the Freedom of Speech and Expression Medal will be granted to the Russian weekly Novaya Gazeta, for their resolute commitment to freedom of the press, the Freedom of Worship Medal to human rights activist and UN-rapporteur for freedom of religion Dr. Asma Jahangir from Pakistan.

    The Solidarity for Asian Peoples Advocacy Taskforce on ASEAN Human Rights (SAPA TFAHR) is disappointed that only two country representatives of the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission for Human Rights (AICHR) responded to our request for a meeting in Jakarta today. The purpose of the requested meeting was to present the civil society proposal for the AICHR’s Rules of Procedures (RoP) as the AICHR meets for the first time to draft the RoP. Representatives of civil society organizations from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand went to the ASEAN Secretariat to present the civil society proposal but were disappointed to be informed that not all the country representatives of the AICHR would be meeting them.
