Although homosexuality generally being tolerated by Buddhism and not being criminalized by Cambodian law, LGBT people in Cambodia still face severe discrimination from families and authorities. Marriage and bearing children are not only crucial to Cambodian culture, but also to peoples economic security; therefore LGBT people are often forced to hide their sexual orientation or gender identity to avoid discrimination and social exclusion. Another difficulty is presented by western concepts such as trassexuality or being gay, which do not conform with traditionla perceptions of gender and sexuality in Cambodia. Subsequently, it is difficult to explain those concepts to LGBT people and make them aware of the human rights that they are entitled to.
