Although international human rights law, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in particular state that all human beings have the same rights, in many countries lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons do not have access to those rights. They often are discriminated and excluded from society, and fall victims to physical and mental abuse. In around 76 countries, they are persecuted and punished for their homosexuality. Recently, efforts in several countries have significantly improved LGBT equality; these changes are hoped to spread to other countries and improve the situations of all LGBT people worldwide.
