Families Want Justice for Slain Workers

Families of garments workers shot dead in Phnom Penh early last month say they are appealing for justice to be done for their beloved ones. Khat Samneang will see only the photos of her husband from now on. Her husband Kim Phalleap was among at least four garment workers shot dead during a violent clash between striking garment workers and the government armed forces on Veng Streng street on January 3, 2014.

Labor Demonstrations Continue in Capital

About 100 riot police blocked demonstrators from submitting petitions to foreign embassies on Wednesday, though in a change from recent days, no violence or clashes ensued. Protesters are demanding the release of 23 people arrested in labor demonstrations earlier this month. Wednesday's demonstration follows violent clashes between police and supporters of Beehive Radio, who on Monday conducted their own protest against the government's refusal to allow the station to expand its operations. Organizers said Wednesday police were not following Cambodia's laws, which allow for freedom of assembly.

Beehive Radio Protesters Clash With Police

More than 100 riot police broke up a demonstration organized by Beehive Radio owner Mam Sonando, who was protesting the government's denial to grant him permission to expand his radio network. Beehive Radio broadcast Voice of America and Radio Free Asia programming, among others. Witnesses say at least nine people were injured when protesters clashed with police armed with shields, electric batons and tear gas.

NGOs Deliver Petitions for Release of 23 Detainees

Nearly 200 representatives from local rights and development organizations on Thursday submitted a petition to foreign embassies in Phnom Penh, calling for help in freeing 23 detained protesters from a remote facility near the Vietnam border. All 23 were arrested in a violent crackdown on demonstrations earlier this month. Thursday's march was not stopped by authorities, who earlier this week briefly detained 11 protest leaders.

Protest Leaders Briefly Detained

A handful of influential protest leaders were grabbed by police and briefly detained Tuesday, released only after they signed promises not to join in more anti-government rallies. Among those arrested were outspoken activists Rong Chhun, a labor leader, and Tep Vanny, a representative of evictees who was given an award in Washington last year. The arrests took place in front of the US Embassy, where protesters had gathered to submit a petition calling for the release of 23 detainees caught up in demonstration crackdowns earlier this month.
