Garment Factories and Supply Chains
Methodology: This information, published by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights ("CCHR"), was gathered from official records of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia ("GMAC") and disclosure of supply chains list from key international brands, as well as from Khmer and English news media which cover news related to factories in Cambodia, as of January 2014. CCHR does not contend that the information presented here is completely accurate and conclusive; some of the information varies from source to source and some information is unavailable to the public. This map represents a list of major garment factories registered with the Ministry of Commerce and related authorities and who are members of GMAC. It is thought that there are additional factories running in Cambodia which are not GMAC members.
- Name of the factory;
- Official location of the factory;
- Country of origin of the factory's owner(s);
- Type of products manufactured at the factory;
- Major brands supplied by the factory;
- Number of workers employed at the factory; and
- Issues, including but not limited to human rights violations, related to individual garment factory.
CCHR encourages other organizations and institutions – governmental and non-governmental – to publish similar information to increase the amount of information available and to enhance public understanding of the issue, particularly as regards labor and human rights-related issues. The aim of this map is to contribute to holding factories accountable for their corporate social responsibility, underpinned by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights under the framework of "Protect, Respect, and Remedy".
Description
The map details a total of 616 garment factories operating in Cambodia; some factories do not have sufficient required information to be included in this research and thus the total number of factories is likely to be higher. The owners of these factories are based in Cambodia as well as from a number of foreign countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macau, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Turkey.
Of these 616 factories, 426 are located in the capital city of Phnom Penh, 87 in Kandal province, 33 in Kampong Speu province and 22 in Sihanoukville province. The other 48 are located in Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot, Koh Kong, Pursat, Siem Reap, Svay Rieng and Takeo provinces. These 616 factories employ at least 503,043 workers; some of the factories do not report the number of employees.
At least 122 of the factories on the map are reported to have produced and supplied products to major international brands, including, but not limited to, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Clarks, H&M, Levi's, Macy, Nike, Old Navy, Puma, Reebok, The Gap and Wal-Mart.
