This afternoon, eight more of the Free the 19 activists were released from detention in Prey Sar’s CC1 prison. Three defrocked monks – Venerable Seung Hai, Venerable Khith Vannak, and Venerable Sang Kosal – and five CNRP members and supporters – Meach Sovannara, Sum Puthy, Tep Narin, Ke Khim, and Ouk Pich Samnang – were released on bail. Following negotiations between Prime Minister Hun Sen and opposition leader Sam Rainsy, the country’s courts are preparing to release 18 activists who have been imprisoned over the past year on protest-related charges and convictions, a lawyer for the CNRP said Friday. Chuong Choungy, a longtime attorney for the opposition, said that he met with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court director on Thursday and filed documents with the Appeal Court in order to facilitate the release of the activists by Monday, the day before the start of the Khmer New Year holiday.

Group Contests Police Report of Gateway Arrests
Police in Siem Reap City said Thursday that they arrested six people on Wednesday for questioning over an arson attack on a decorative gateway built for the Angkor Sangkranta festival. Too Many Cambodian Women Dying During Childbirth
Cambodia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Southeast Asia. The number of women dying during pregnancy or childbirth has dropped in recent years. But it is still far short of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. The Cambodian government accepted those goals as part of its effort to help pregnant women. Cambodia’s Military Police Suspends Six Officers For ‘Torturing’ Villagers
Cambodia’s National Military Police Department on Friday suspended six officers from neighboring Tbong Khmum and Prey Veng provinces who allegedly shot at and tortured four villagers last month after they tried to avoid paying a fee for driving an overloaded vehicle. The decision to suspend the officers, including a district chief and the head of a commune police department, was made by National Military Police Commander in Chief Sao Sokha after an investigation into the case concluded that the six had acted in breach of the law.
