The U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh and 49 local and international NGOs have called on the Cambodian government to immediately release local journalist Mech Dara following his arrest and pre-trial detention over an incitement charge, which took place over the past two days. In its joint statement, concerned NGOs and communities declared that the charge against Dara, which carries a maximum prison sentence of two years, is “a clear attempt to silence a brave journalist whose investigative journalism has routinely called for accountability in cases of human rights violations.”

An award-winning Cambodian journalist known for his reporting on human trafficking in the cyber scam industry was arrested on Monday, according to the independent Cambodian Journalists Alliance Association (CamboJA). Mech Dara won a Hero Award last year for his investigations into exploitation at online scam compounds in Cambodia. The award, which recognises efforts against human trafficking, was presented by US secretary of state Antony Blinken.

PM Orders Justice Ministry To Review Drunk Driver’s Five-Year Sentence in Fatal Crash
Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the Ministry of Justice on September 26 to review the case of a drunk motorist who was sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined $5,000 after mowing down four people in a traffic accident in January 2024. The order came after the Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued the verdict on Neang Sam Oun on September 25 following the fatal traffic accident in Russey Keo, which also injured four persons. In addition, Sam Oun was banned from driving for five years after he completed his sentence.
