The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) condemns today’s ruling by the Kampong Chhang provincial court that found Sam Chankea, provincial coordinator for local rights group ADHOC, guilty of Defaming the work of KDC International, a company owned by the wife of the Minister for Industry, Mines and Energy. The verdict is a stark reminder of how the criminalization of defamation continues to Move Cambodia further away from being a country that upholds principles of freedom of expression. It also provides further evidence of the shrinking democratic space within which human rights defenders can operate.
