The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) and Media Defence Southeast Asia (MD-SEA) are gravely alarmed by the 20-year prison sentence imposed on Mr. Mam Sonando, 70, and owner and director of an independent radio station in Phnom Penh. We believe Mam Sonando is the victim of a grave injustice arising from his consistent opposition to the ruling party, as well as independent broadcasting of social and political issues plaguing the country through his radio station, Beehive (105 mhz. FM).

Venerable Loun Sovath Wins Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders
October 2, 2012 - Venerable Loun Sovath was awarded the 2012 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders on Oct. 2, becoming the first Cambodian ever to win the prestigious honor. The award, known colloquially as the “Nobel Prize for human rights”, was created in 1993 to honor and protect individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage in defending and promoting human rights. Sovath is the first Buddhist monk and first Southeast Asian to win the award. He was on hand to receive the award during a special ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland.

CCHR President Ou Virak Will Face Questions at Ratanakiri Court on Monday 8 October 2012
Ou Virak, President of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”), has confirmed that he will face questions at the Ratanakiri Provincial Court in Banlung City, Ratanakiri province, on the morning of Monday 8 October 2012. He was originally summonsed to appear on Thursday 18 October 2012, but due to a prior commitment to attend a conference held by the World Movement for Democracy in Lima, Peru, on 14-17 October 2012, entitled “Democracy for All: Ensuring Political, Economic and Social Inclusion” – he requested that the summons be brought forwards, which the Ratanakiri Provincial Court has kindly agreed to.

Cambodia: Politically-Motivated Sentence Against Sonando Strongly Condemned (Verdict a Serious Blow to Freedom of Expression and Judicial Independence as Web of Attacks on Activists and Journalists Widen)
(Bangkok, 2 October 2012) Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), a regional human rights organization representing 49 non-governmental organizations across Asia, strongly condemns the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in Cambodia for its conviction of independent radio station owner Mam Sonando yesterday, to a 20-year jail sentence for allegedly inciting a purported “secessionist movement” in the Kratie province in Cambodia. The guilty verdict was made despite the lack of credible evidence, bringing to question the political motivations and the independence of the Cambodian judiciary.

Joint Statement Investigation into Human Rights Violations Related to Trade Preferences for Cambodian Agro-industrial Products Must Begin Now
(October 1, 2012) Eleven Cambodian and international organizations wrote to European Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht today following upon an open letter they sent to the Commissioner on June 26th outlining evidence of grave human rights abuses in the Cambodian agro-industrial sector directly linked to the EU’s Everything But Arms (EBA) preferential trade scheme. These communications have followed two years of requests by Cambodian organizations and affected communities seeking action from the European Commission (EC) on well-documented abuses occurring as a result of EBA incentives – abuses that should trigger an EC investigation under Article 17 of the EU’s Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Regulation.

Cambodia: Quash Convictions of Critics, Protesters
(New York, October 2, 2012) – Cambodia’s donors, including the United States, European Union, Japan, and the United Nations, should insist on the immediate release of prominent critic of the government Mom Sonando and other activists convicted on trumped-up charges. On October 1, 2012, a Phnom Penh criminal court sentenced Sonando to 20 years in prison on trumped up charges of participating in a purported “secession” movement, while three local activists were sentenced to terms of 15 to 30 years and three others to terms of up to 5 years.

The International Human Rights Movement Announces the 2012 Martin Ennals Award Winner, a Cambodian Monk Working to Prevent Forced Evictions
The Jury of the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders (MEA), met in Geneva today and selected the Venerable LUON Sovath as the 2012 Martin Ennals Award winner. The Prize winner was announced at a ceremony hosted by the City of Geneva at Victoria Hall.
