Cambodia’s media is often described as one of the freest in the region, but in reality journalists describe an environment in which the pursuit of truth is undermined by political bias, fear and corruption. Most of Cambodia’s media outlets are aligned to political party and most favor the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Bribes are so commonplace they are not even considered corruption. Formal censorship exists and self-censorship is widespread through Cambodia’s media.

Cambodia: Durable Solution to Land Grabbing Lies with the Due Process of Law
Land grabbing has been plaguing Cambodia for many year. In early March 2007, a month prior to the commune election, Prime Minister Hun Sen loudly announced a "war against land grabbers" , and almost immediately after this announcement several land grabbers were arrested or forced to give up the land they had grabbed. This war lost almost all its thrust after the election was over and Hun Sen ruling party had secured the control of the overwhelming majority of communes across the country.

Child Workers in Brick Factories Causes and Consequences a Research Study
The study is designed to describe the working and living conditions of children working in brick factories and the impact of child labour on child development. In addition, reasons for working, reasons for involving children in child labour, and reasons for employing children are documented based on the interviews with child workers, their parents, and their employers. The research sites are all brick factories in two districts in Battambang province: Battambang and Sang Ke districts, which are the surrounding areas of Battambang provincial city. Data were collected using interviewer-completed questionnaires from three main sources (132 child workers, 43 parents, and 15 brick factory owners or managers) from 26 brick factories.

How Politics, Money and Fear Control Cambodias Media Report 2008
The survey questionnaire was produced in August 2007. A first draft, written in English and translated into Khmer, was trialed with a focus group of seven Cambodian journalists and editors in late August. Their valuable feedback led to some amendments of the questionnaire and to the methodology of conducting the survey.

Detained Policeman Transferred to Hospital Because of Poor Health
Pring Pov, the Kep policeman who has been unlawfully detained for more than one month by the Ministry of Interior, was sent by police to Monivong Hospital yesterday. The Cambodia Human Rights and Development Organization (ADHOC) and the Cambodian League for Defense and Promotion of Human Rights (LICADHO) are deeply concerned for his health and once more call for his immediate release.

Cambodia: Opposition Officials Arrested to Sway Elections
(New York) - Politically motivated criminal charges against at least three opposition party officials are part of a ruling party campaign to weaken political rivals prior to national elections in July 2008, Human Rights Watch said today. The authorities last week arrested Tuot Saron, an official of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), and sought the arrest of at least two other SRP officials. Human Rights Watch fears that additional SRP officials may also be arrested imminently.

Cambodia: Prosecutor’s Contempt for Human Rights Calls for Action Against Him
On 22 February 2008 the deputy prosecutor attached to Phnom Penh Court named Hing Bunchea led a police force to execute the Supreme Court’s order to evict 23 families in Banla Saet village, Khmuonh commune, Russey Keo district, Phnom Penh. Hing used a police force of 500 men armed with assault and other rifles, batons, shields and tear gas grenades. He also used two excavators to demolish houses.

Prison Conditions in Cambodia 2007 The Story of a Mother and Child
There are many mothers and children who face the same struggles that Lina and Maly endured whilst living in Cambodian prisons. For women who are sentenced to long periods of imprisonment, they may only be able to live with their child for a few years. It is vital that all women prisoners (and indeed, all prisoners) are provided with better living conditions, however, for those women who also bring their children to live in the prisons, it is of the utmost importance that these families are supported and that the relationship between mother and child is preserved and respected. More importantly, it is essential to protect the rights of the child who lives and grows up in prison.
