Cambodia: Verdict A Setback for Indigenous Land Rights
Human Rights Watch today expressed strong concern about a provincial court ruling in the highlands of northeasern Cambodian that dispossesses more than 900 indigenous people of their ancestral lands. On March 23, the provincial court in Ratanakiri province ruled against a civil complaint brought by ethnic Jarai and Tampuen people in three villages.

Cambodian Human Rights Workers Intimidated, Threatened with Arrest
New York -- Human Rights Watch today condemned threats of arrest against staff members of the Cambodian human rights organization Licadho (the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights). The threats are reportedly because of its role in providing humanitarian assistance to victims of labor abuse, including ethnic Vietnamese minorities.

Role and Achievements of the OHCHR Cambodia
The Office provided support to the mission of two experts visiting the country to identify priorities for reform of the police. The Office also provided support to a mission of senior officials from the Office of Legal Affairs and the Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations and an independent expert who visited the country in August to discuss with the Cambodian authorities the modalities for the establishment of a tribunal with a view to bringing to justice the perpetrators of serious human rights violations committed during the Khmer Rouge period.

Human Rights Watch Condemns Rearrest Campaign in Cambodia
(New York) -- Human Rights Watch today condemned the widespread rearrests of people previously released from prison by the courts in Cambodia. The rearrests were ordered by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on December 3, 1999. The organization also expressed strong concern about the safety and whereabouts of some of the fifty-four people arrested. Some of the court officials, who approved the prison releases, have received threats since the rearrests began.
