Cambodia’s Legislature Dismantled on the Eve of the National Elections
June 10, 2013 - Cambodia’s National Assembly – its key legislative organ – has been thrust into a Constitutional crisis less than two months before the country’s national elections. Last week, the National Assembly’s Permanent Committee, which is comprised entirely of ruling Cambodia People’s Party members, stripped all 29 opposition party members of their parliamentary status. Because this expulsion took place within 6 months of a national election, the seats left empty by the purged parliamentarians were effectively terminated and will remain so under until after the election.

Open letter: Freedom of Expression and the Proposed Law to Criminalize Denial of Crimes Committed by the Khmer Rouge
Amnesty International is concerned about reports of a planned new Law on Refusing to Recognise Crimes Committed in the Period of Democratic Kampuchea Law (hereinafter the “Khmer Rouge Crime Denial Law”). The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) is gravely concerned that the new draft law on the Denial of Crimes Committed During Democratic Kampuchea (the “Denial Law”) called for by Prime Minister Hun Sen, if passed, will restrict freedom of expression through placing illegitimate limitations on public discussion, research, and education about the Khmer Rouge era, as well as attempting to legitimize the stifling of opposition voices.

Release Yorm Bopha and Find a Just Resolution for the Boeung Kak
Phnom Penh, 06 June 2013 - On 05 June 2013 monitors from the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) attended the appeal hearing of Ms. Yorm Bopha. Bopha was arrested on 04 September 2012 and detained for four months before being sentenced to three years in prison under Article 218 of the Cambodian Criminal Code 2009: "intentional violence with aggravating circumstances".
