One Year After Borei Keila Eviction, 'No Solution'

It has been exactly one year since the residents of the impoverished Phnom Penh neighborhood of Borei Keila were forcibly evicted and relocated to desolate camps outside the capital. Evictees marked the day Thursday with blessings from Buddhist monks and hopes they will be compensated by the development company. Hundreds of families were evicted from the neighborhood to make way for a residential development project, and former residents say the company, Phanimex, failed to provide the housing it had promised in exchange for the land.

Housing Activists Sentenced to Three Years Each in Prison

Rights Worker Questioned in Ongoing Secessionist Crackdown

Chan Soveth, a prominent rights investigator, appeared before the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday, but he was not detained. Chan Soveth has been charged with abetting the escape of several suspects in a security crackdown in Kratie province earlier this year. Police say he helped several men escape who were wanted in connection with an alleged secessionist plot that has already landed a prominent radio station owner, Mam Sonando, in jail. Chan Soveth, who was accompanied to the court by officials from the US Embassy, was released after questioning. He briefly told journalists afterward that it was unclear what would happen next, but that he would appeal to have the charges against him dropped.

40,000 Signatures Call for Protection Against Land Violation

Nearly 300 representatives from families in 24 provinces and cities issued a petition to the National Assembly Monday, calling for better government protection of their land rights and the prevention of violence in land disputes. The petition, which included 40,0000 signatures, says Cambodians have "suffered seriously" from forced evictions and land grabs, impacting their jobs, education and basic needs like food, shelter and health. It calls on National Assembly President Heng Samrin to help stop the evictions and have the courts release land activists who remain in jail.

Cambodian Gangnam Style: Dancing To End Evictions

December 19, 2012 - From December 8th to December 17th, more than 42,000 Cambodians across the country celebrated "International Human Rights Day". Events were held to highlight land, labor, and human rights with the unifying slogan "We All Need Justice & Freedom!". The final event took place in Phnom Penh the morning of December 17th, when organizers & volunteers danced to a land-rights themed rendition of "Gangnam-style" in front of the National Assembly wearing t shirts which had been endorsed by over 11, 000 Cambodians. Participants also presented over 40,000 signatures calling for an end to evictions in Cambodia coordinated by Amnesty International volunteers living in France, Germany, New Zealand & South Korea.
