Mam Sonando Denied Release on Bail Cambodia

The Court of Appeals on Friday denied a request by the owner of beehive radio that he be freed on bail until his appeal hearing, saying his dual citizenship made him a flight risk. Mam Sonando, 72, who also holds a French passport, is serving a 20-year prison sentence on charges related to sedition, charges that critics say is politically motivated and that has caused concern amid US and international observers. Mam Sonando told the court Friday he is losing a kilogram a week in prison and that he fears for his health.

Thousands of garment workers joined rights advocates and others on a march in Phnom Penh Monday, marking the 64th International Human Rights Day. The march moved from the Olympic Stadium to Freedom Park. Separately, a group of housing rights activists say they were blocked by police from submitting a petition to Prime Minister Hun Sen, leading to minor clashes.
