Men who have sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender people, are disproportionally affected by HIV and AIDS. Due to frequent discrimination, they are often denied the most basic human rights and access to healthcare in particular. The most recent data on HIV infections among MSM was collected in 2005, indicating that HIV prevalence among MSM in Phnom Penh was at least six times that of the general population.

Due to common misconceptions of lesbian sexual behavior, various false beliefs and prejudices regarding lesbians health have spread not only among lesbians themselves, but also by health care professionals. Examples of those myths are HIV not being transmitted between women, or lesbians being immune to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), presenting serious health threats, if taken seriously.

HENG Sreyleang*, a lesbian living in Battambang province, says she has no recourse to challenge her parents, who intend for her to marry a man.[How] is it that my parents can force me to get married without society or the authorities punishing them? I want to live with the person I love, she said in a recent interview with the CambodianCentre for Human Rights.She said she had nowhere to turn for help after her family intervened to end her relationship.They stopped me talking to women and my girlfriend’s family has stopped her from meeting me, she said.
