Cambodia passes bill criminalizing genocide denial
Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said his group believes it is not necessary to have a law that prohibits denials that serious crimes were committed under the Khmer Rouge. "Restricting debate, discussion and education about the Khmer Rouge period through such a law would be to the detriment of survivors, rather than for their benefit," he said in a statement. "The law is therefore a blatant politicization of our country's history in order to score points before the national elections."

Khmer Rouge Prison Chief Transferred for Life Sentence
PHNOM PENH - Khmer Rouge torture chief Kaing Kek Iev, better known as Duch, has been transferred to a prison in Kandal province, outside the capital, where he will serve a life sentence for his role as supervisor of Tuol Sleng prison. Duch was transferred early Thursday morning to the detention facility in Kandal, 30 kilometers from Phnom Penh, to serve out a sentence for atrocity crimes, torture and murder. More than 12,000 people were tortured and sent to their executions at the center overseen by Duch, who was found guilty for his crimes by the UN-backed tribunal in February 2012. He will have a cell to himself, but other than that, “he’ll be treated the same as the rest of the prisoners,” tribunal spokesman Neth Pheaktra told VOA Khmer.

Cambodian parliament unanimously passes law to criminalize denial of Khmer Rouge crimes
PHNOM PENH, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The National Assembly of Cambodia on Friday unanimously adopted the Law on the Denial of Crimes Committed during the Period of the Democratic Kampuchea, or Khmer Rouge regime, from 1975-1979. "Under the law, individuals who refuse to acknowledge, diminish, deny, or challenge the existence of crimes or glorify crimes committed during the regime will be jailed from six months to two years and fined between 250 U.S. dollars and 1,000 U.S. dollars," said Pen Panha, chairman of the National Assembly's commission on legislation and justice.
