Labor Unions Call For New Wage Negotiations
Thirteen of the country's labor unions, unsatisfied with last month's 5$ increase to the national minimum wage for garment workers, will sent a joint letter today to the Ministry of labor and the employers association demanding a new round of negotiations, union leaders said yesterday. Ath Thon, president of the Cambodian labor confederation, which comprises the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union and the Cambodian National confederation, said that 13 labor federation and association would jointly sign the latter and submit it to the Labor Ministry and Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia today.

More than 30 years after the fall of the Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia, the first guilty verdict was handed out last 26 July 2010 by the Trial Chamber of The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)-popularly known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. It was the conviction of Kaing Guek Eav aka Duch, one of four people including Nuon Chea aka Brother Number Two, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith (aka Khmer Rouge First Lady) and Khieu Samphan who have been brought to court for genocide, crime against humanity and other war crimes.

Dismissed Victims Prepare Tribunal Appeal
Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, who is found guilty of crimes against humanity by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on Monday, will serve 19 years of 35 year sentence for war crimes. “We are preparing the appeal because our clients firstly were not pleased with the verdict, and they are unhappy with the decision to dismiss them.”Lawyers for a number of victims of Khmer Rouge torture chief Duch say they will appeal a court decision to dismiss their clients.

O’YADAW DISTRICT, Ratanakkiri provincial- More than 40 percent of Ratanakkiri provincial, or about 4,400 square km, has been licensed to 10 mining companies for exploration in recent years, according to data made available by Ratanakkiri provincial last week. Although the companies’s activities have been limited to exploration, some communities in the province have complained that operations have disturbed or destroyed their villager lands and NGO workers now say the companies and the government need to do more consult local communities before starting exploration.
