Police Officer in Phnom Penh Charged With Two Murders
A police officer who allegedly shot two men to death and injured three others in revenge attack at a neighbor's house in the capital last week was charged with murder on Friday, a court official said yesterday. Deputy municipal prosecutor Hing Bunchea said the court had charged Meas Vonseaneath, 44-year-old police officer in Sen Sok district's Khmounh commune, with the murders of his neighbors Long Hun, 47, and Long Kyheng, 17, at their house in Phnom Penh Thmei commune.

Study Provides New Hope For HIV Patients Infected With TB
Researchers from Cambodia, France and the US yesterday announced the results of a study conducted here that showed a sharp reduction in mortality among HIV patients who are infected with tuberculosis, a finding that could pave the way to a new protocol in treating such so-called co-infections .The researchers, who spent four years studying 661 Cambodian patients co-infected with HIV and TB, found that mortality dropped 34 percent when patients began treatment of HIV two weeks, rather than eight weeks, after starting TB treatment.

A group of victims of the Pol Pot regime demanded yesterday that the Khmer Rouge tribunal, upon completion of its work, donate its entire office inventory to them in order to establish 24 provincial "learning centers" to educate Cambodians about the Democratic Kampuchea era. No one else has a greater moral and legal right to these equipment and inventory than the civil parties for the welfare of all the victims, the Association of Khmer Rouge Victims in Cambodia said in a statement .

The Shortcomings of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal
The UN-Cambodia hybrid Khmer Rouge Tribunal, known formally as the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), will deliver its first verdict in the trial of Kaing Guek Eav (or “Duch”) on July 26. Duch was the torturer-in-chief of the S-21 prison during the rule of the Khmer Rouge regime, which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. An estimated 1.7 million Cambodians were believed to have been killed or died from hard labor and starvation during this period.
