The prison sentence given yesterday o former S-21 chairman kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, met with scant approval among some Cambodians. Duch was convicted yesterday by the Khmer Rouge tribunal of overseeing the deaths of more than 12,000 people. the court handed him a 35-year prison sentence, which was then reduced to 19 years after taking into account his unlawful 11-year pretrial detention and subtracting time served.

Google has revised the Thai-Cambodia borderline on its online mapping service after the Cambodian government criticized the Internet giant in February for misrepresenting the contentious. Google Maps yesterday showed Preah Vichea temple within Cambodia, while previously the international borderline between the two countries cut through the middle of the 11th-century-based sanctuary.

Khmer Rouge prison chief Duch found guilty
Former Khmer Rouge prison chief Duch has been found guilty of crimes against humanity by Cambodia's UN-backed war crimes tribunal. Duch, 67, whose full name is Kaing Guek Eav, was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He had admitted overseeing the torture and execution of thousands of men, women and children at the notorious Tuol Sleng prison, and asked for forgiveness. This is the tribunal's first verdict.

In Duch Sentence, How Many Days For His Victims
Whatever sentence the Khmer Rouge tribunal may hand down today, former S-21 Chairman Kaing Guek Eav will never live long enough to pay for his crimes. If indeed the accused, known as Duch, is sentenced to 40 years as prosecutors have asked, will spend about 1.04days in prison for each of his estimated 14,000 victims. Should the sentence fall lower still, in recognition of his professed contrition and cooperation with the court or of the illegality of his pretrial detention, he my have mere hours to contemplate each of the lives he ended in torture, abasement and violence.

Garment Workers Get Blocked From Rally In Phnom Penh
Several thousand garment workers headed for a banned public forum at Phnom Penh's wat Botum Park were blocked from entering the city yesterday morning, union officials said, threatening renewed strikes if a new minimum wage is not raised. Though authorities eventually allowed some of the National Assembly yesterday, rights groups criticized the ban and accused the government of suppressing workers' rights.

The Duch Trial: A Good Example for the Cambodian Courts
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights, a Southeast Asia Initiative grantee, applauded the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia for highlighting military abuses and illegal detention in Cambodia. The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) congratulates the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (“ECCC”) on the delivery of its verdict in the case of Kaing Guek Eav, “Duch”, the first senior cadre to be brought to justice for the crimes of the Khmer Rouge era. The trial of Duch constitutes an important model for the domestic courts in Cambodia to follow in terms of procedure and the rights of the accused. In this regard, the CCHR welcomes the five year reduction in the sentence given to Duch as a result of his illegal detention by the Cambodian Military between 10 May 1999 and 30 July 2007. This reduction in sentence provides a good example to the domestic courts of Cambodia, whose detention practices remain a serious concern, and serves as a reminder of the universality of human rights.
