American Man Convicted Over Child-Sex Trips to Cambodia
A Cambodian-American man was convicted by a U.S. federal jury in Alaska on Monday of attempting to travel to Cambodia to have sex with underage girls, U.S. media reported. The U.S. district court found Jason Jayavarman, 45, of Anchorage, guilty of one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children and one count of attempted travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place, according to the website of KTVA 11 News in Alaska.

NGO releases ELC figures to help with ‘shortcomings’
The NGO Forum yesterday released an extensive and updated accounting of economic land concessions (ELCs) in the Kingdom, suggesting that in a 20-year period, 267 ELCs totalling 1,532,783 hectares were granted. In a statement announcing the data’s release, the NGO Forum said it had been compiled in hopes the government could use it to address “shortcomings” in the ELC process.

Four garment workers arrested in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet town during mass strikes that turned violent in December were released on Tuesday evening. Foreign Minister Responds to Ban Ki-moon
After initially refusing to comment on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s surprise telephone call to Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn last week, the ministry has released Mr. Sokhonn’s purported replies, all defending the government’s latest crackdown on the opposition. On Thursday, the U.N. revealed that Mr. Ban had called the foreign minister a few days earlier and “expressed his concerns” about what he called the widespread intimidation, harassment and arrests of opposition members, rights workers and the media. It said the secretary-general urged the government to revive the “culture of dialogue” the ruling CPP forged with the CNRP in the wake of 2013’s bitterly disputed national election.

UNESCO push will clear villagers off of Kulen Mountain
Hundreds of villagers living on Siem Reap’s historic Phnom Kulen are reeling after the government announced they would be relocated as part of a scheme to secure a UNESCO World Heritage Listing for the site. Poung Lyna, the head of the Siem Reap environment department, yesterday confirmed the news villagers received over the weekend. “About 300 families, most of which are army and newcomers’ families who live near the Preah Ang Thom area on Kulen Mountain, will be relocated to a new place soon as their presence is affecting the environment of the national park,” Lyna said.
