U.S. Embassy Launches Program to Support Women in Business
The US embassy in Cambodia has launched the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), a program designed to equip women with business skills, entrepreneurial resources and networking opportunities. In collaboration with Paññāsāstra University in Phnom Penh and Impact Hub, an Austrian social enterprise group, the US Embassy has welcomed 30 women from diverse fields in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to join Cambodia’s first cohort of the AWE program.

Big brands urge Cambodian govt to drop independent union probe
Big brands including Adidas and Puma are urging the Cambodian government to halt investigations into an independent union and drop a criminal complaint against its leader, which they say could be perceived as restricting civil society space. Eighteen brands, all members of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), made it clear they were concerned about labor rights group, Center for Alliance of Labor and Human Rights (CENTRAL), which has been targeted for investigation by local authorities.

Facebook User Charged For Comments On Vietnamese, Cambodia-Vietnam Border Post
A 53-year-old woman was charged with incitement to disturb social security after making a comment on Facebook criticizing the demarcation border post between Cambodia and Vietnam. Highest Court Upholds Unionist Vorn Pao’s 2014 Conviction
The Supreme Court upheld the decision of a lower court on Monday in a case dating back to 2014 which convicted 10 people after a nationwide garment workers’ strike to demand higher minimum wage. Presiding Judge Nil Non who read out the verdict, dismissed the appeal filed by Vorn Pao, president of Independent Democracy of Informal Economy Association (IDEA), noting that the lower court decided the matter correctly.

The third textile, garment, footwear and travel goods minimum wage negotiation for 2025 has yet to reach a consensus, even though employers representatives raised their offer from $1 to $2, while union representatives dropped their rate from $14 to $10. Heng Sour, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, said the third wage negotiation was "more remarkable than the previous one" as the employers added another $1 to make it $2.

Cambodia creates panel to monitor sand-dredging after protests from residents

Investor pressure on Nike is building ahead of Tuesday’s annual shareholder meeting, with Norway’s sovereign wealth fund pledging to back a resolution demanding the company consider ways it can improve working conditions at garment factories. Nike is struggling with sliding sales and also faces criticisms over its supply chain. Investment research firm MSCI downgraded its ESG (environmental, social and governance) rating for Nike in 2022 and 2023, and rates it as a “laggard” on supply chain labor standards.
