HRW Says 94 People Arrested In Alleged Anti-CLV-DTA Sweep, Authorities Deny Figure
Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the Cambodian government to immediately drop the charges of those who were arbitrarily arrested for publicly criticizing the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Areas (CLV-DTA). However, government spokesperson Pen Bona stated that those who were arrested “violated laws” and had nothing to do with them exercising their freedom of expression. According to the HRW statement on Wednesday, 94 people were arrested, with at least 59 charged, under arrest or in pretrial detention.

Research has found that people with disabilities in Cambodia continue to face significant challenges when it comes to finding employment. The Digital for All program culminated with a workshop called Disability Inclusion: Collated Solutions on Civic Engagement for People with Disabilities on July 18. The research report was released on August 12, 2024. The project’s goal was for civic engagement to be more inclusive for people with disabilities by raising awareness about strategies on digital platforms, promoting behavioral changes, and influencing policymakers on digital literacy and necessary accommodations.

Japan-based Cambodian activist demands Hun Sen and PM son release his brother
A Cambodian political activist in exile in Japan is demanding the release of his brother, who has been detained in Phnom Penh in a move seen as an act of “revenge” for criticism levelled against the previous Hun Sen government and his son Prime Minister Hun Manet. Vannith Hay, 28, brother of activist Vanna Hay, was detained on August 16 as he attempted to cross the Cambodian border into Thailand, the latter told This Week in Asia. Vannith was trying to flee his homeland just days after Vanna managed to get seven members of his immediate family to Japan, where he has lived since 2008.

Despite Dismissal Of Case Against Kuy Residents, Land Encroachment Persists
Preah Vihear Provincial Court dismissed a legal case against four Kuy indigenous residents of M’lou Prey II commune, Chheb district in April this year, rendering it “null and void” and “not necessary” due to lack of compelling evidence. However, problems have cropped up with outsiders trying to assert authority on the land again. On February 27, Preah Vihear provincial court questioned them to hear their testimonies about the dispute with the company on the concession land which appeared to have stalled its development.

Cambodia announces fundraising effort for ‘border infrastructure’
Overseas Cambodians held protests in South Korea, Japan, France, Canada and Australia on Aug. 11. Planned demonstrations in Cambodia on Aug. 18 were never held after the government deployed security forces and arrested more than 30 people. The fundraising effort appears to be aimed at harnessing some of the nationalistic sentiment sparked by CLV critics, according to Oum Sam An, a former lawmaker for the former main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party.
