Award-winning journalist Mech Dara, known for his fearless investigations of human trafficking and cybercrimes in Cambodia, sits in a crowded prison cell, his spirit unbroken. A friend visited Dara, 36, at Kandal Provincial Prison, 10 kilometers from Phnom Penh, bringing him food, clothes and medicine. The friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, said Dara remained in high spirits and was grateful for the support from his friends and the public.

Hun Sen says adviser defrauded several Cambodians with bribe demands
Former Prime Minister Hun Sen said one of his top advisers, Ly Samet, solicited bribes in exchange for favors and government positions and has defrauded several Cambodians over the last two years – including one incident in which US$10 million was paid. Hun Sen wrote on Facebook on Monday that Ly Samet’s assets should be frozen, and Phnom Penh court officials should issue an order to return money he accepted from people.

Another Minor Party Joins Alliance Towards the Future to Defeat the Ruling CPP
A minor party, Kampuchea Niyum Party, running on a pro-democracy platform to advocate for human rights and restore freedoms, is now part of the Alliance Towards the Future coalition. PM Orders Justice Ministry To Review Drunk Driver’s Five-Year Sentence in Fatal Crash
Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the Ministry of Justice on September 26 to review the case of a drunk motorist who was sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined $5,000 after mowing down four people in a traffic accident in January 2024. The order came after the Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued the verdict on Neang Sam Oun on September 25 following the fatal traffic accident in Russey Keo, which also injured four persons. In addition, Sam Oun was banned from driving for five years after he completed his sentence.
