Chhim Sithar believes that the primary aim of the redundancies was to weaken the LRSU’s influence within the company. The union was on the verge of representing half of the casino’s employees, which, under Cambodian law, would have allowed it to participate in annual collective bargaining. In response to the dismissals, Sithar led a series of demonstrations calling for the reinstatement of the terminated employees. Courts resolve over 130,000 cases as campaign picks up steam

Baby trafficking syndicates in Cambodia recruiting Filipinos
Cambodian police have rescued 20 Filipino women who were allegedly trafficked into the country to be used as surrogate mothers in a baby trafficking ring. Of the 20, at least 13 are pregnant and are currently receiving care at a local hospital, while the remaining seven are set to be repatriated, according to the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, October 8. The embassy issued the statement in response to a report by the Cambodia-based Khmer Times on the same day that details the involvement of an unnamed Philippine agency in bringing Filipino women to Cambodia to serve as surrogate mothers, despite the country’s ban on surrogacy.

Cambodia’s communities partner with USAID for conservation grants
The essential elements of each grant include enhancing the institutional capacity of CBOs, improving local livelihoods, engaging in carbon financing projects and conserving community-managed ecosystems. Eight local communities have signed small grants agreements (SGAs) with the USAID Conserve project to build capacity, improve community livelihoods and preserve natural resources on the Tonle Sap and in wildlife sanctuaries. The small-scale direct grants are provided because these communities serve as the front line in safeguarding protected areas, which play a vital role in conserving wildlife and natural resources. Providing direct grants to community-based organisations (CBOs) is the foundation of USAID Conserve’s approach to locally led environmental conservation and community development, according to USAID Conserve on Tuesday, October 8.

Internet users in Kingdom surge to 20 million
Cambodia has 20 million internet subscribers both mobile and fixed as of June, an increase of 16.6 million registered in 2020, the year of pandemic, a report of the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia showed on Wednesday. The report stated that mobile internet users increased to 21.9 million, up 5.2 percent from 20.8 million recorded in 2020.

Lvea Em district governor dismissed after $300,000 fraud scandal
Prime Minister Hun Manet has dismissed Kan Sokkhay from his position as Lvea Em district governor in Kandal province after he was cheated by Oknha Ly Samet, to whom he paid $300,000 in an attempt to secure the position of Arey Ksat town governor. In a sub-decree dated October 8, Manet stated that Sokkhay was removed from office due to “serious ethical and professional misconduct, in violation of the Civil Service Statute of the Kingdom of Cambodia”.
