Economic Land Concessions
Varying legislation on how land can be concessioned and for what purpose makes monitoring ELC’s extremely difficult. Concessions mapped here include those which are presented on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries but predominantly sources come from the Technical Working Group on Forestry and Environment which is not as open to the public as it could be. Under the land Law (2001) ELC’s can’t exceed 10,000ha however there has not been any systematic review of concessions as required by the Sub-Decree on ELC’s. Again some of the variations in hectares listed on the database reflect true boundary values derived from mapping software when creating the shape files from GPS points thus not necessarily reflecting the actually size agreed upon in contracts between companies and the RGC.
